Health

In the United States, the allied health workforce comprises around nine million professionals across more than 80 specialized roles. These individuals make up nearly 60% of all U.S. healthcare personnel.

Globally, there are an estimated 30 million allied health professionals (2024), but the World Health Organization reports that a shortfall of around 2 million allied health professionals persists. This shortage reflects urgent workforce expansion needs, especially for rehabilitation occupations in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where provider densities often fall below 0.1 professionals per 10,000 population. The inability for many LMICs to employ, adequately compensate, and retain workforce talent continues to contribute to the decision of some allied health professionals to seek work and opportunity in other countries.

There is a global demand for allied health workers, and the need for portable credentials that can enable career mobility—whether in country or abroad—will continue to be critical to this workforce. Global shortage, the need for career advancement pathways, and the pursuit of opportunity will continue to shape the distribution of this workforce around the globe and drive career advancement. And the ability to demonstrate and validate education, experience, and credentials will be the passport to those opportunities.
