A 2025 industry analysis reports over 735,000 licensed physical therapists worldwide, facilitating more than 1.8 billion therapy sessions annually. The World Health Organization projects substantial shortages in lower-income regions as part of a broader 18 million global health worker deficit by 2030, disproportionately affecting rehabilitation professions like PT.

In the U.S., according to data from the 2025 supply and demand forecast published by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), there were approximately 233,890 physical therapist FTEs in the United States in 2022, with a shortfall of 5.2% fewer physical therapists than needed to meet the estimated demand. Demand is forecasted to grow faster than the population growth rate by 2037—with a 14.7% growth in demand for physical therapist services compared with an 8% growth in population.

This data underscores the need for global physical therapists to have the right resources to navigate international career mobility challenges and decisions. That means access to high-quality education, verifiable skills and credentials, career advancement opportunities, and professional development resources to support career portability and leadership pathways.

No matter what your goals are, we can help you get there.

How we support physical therapists

For global physical therapists who are pursuing career advancement opportunities, either within or outside of their countries, achieving those goals will require validated completion of appropriate and/or comparable education as well as verified professional credentials (like registration or licensure) and work experience. For those looking to migrate to the U.S., language proficiency assessment and health care worker certification will be required to apply for a visa and licensure.

Want to work in the U.S.?

Here are the steps for navigating our migration-support programs for PTs:

  • Get your credentials verified and evaluated for state licensure. Go through our ICD Program (details below) for evaluation of your professional credentials, including education.
  • Secure your VisaScreen certification to apply for a U.S. work visa. Keep in mind that waiting lists and wait times for USCIS visa approval will vary greatly, and a VisaScreen certificate is only valid for 3 years, so keep an eye on your USCIS wait time when applying with us for VisaScreen certification.

Evaluation

Health care worker certification for a U.S. visa

For PTs pursuing work in the United States, the ability to secure a visa through U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will require the issuance of a health care worker certificate by an approved entity. TruMerit has been approved by USCIS to issue these certificates for physical therapists seeking eligibility to practice in the U.S. Find out more here:

Credentials evaluation

Applying for state licensure within the United States will require a comprehensive evaluation of your professional credentials, which includes a comparability assessment of your education against U.S. standards for eligibility to practice. We offer credentials evaluation for physical therapists through the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD), a program operated by TruMerit and a charter member of NACES. Find out more here:

Verification

Credentials verification for New York state

If you’re pursuing employment as a physical therapist in the state of New York, you will need to apply for credentials verification with the state of New York directly or through TruMerit, as we perform credentials verification on their behalf. (Note: Our processing times are much quicker.) Find out more here:

Note: Verification of credentials is included in the comprehensive evaluation services under Evaluation below.

Certification

Global certification

For licensed physical therapists who wish to earn a rehabilitative care credential built on a global competency framework, we offer a certification program and exam to support that goal. The framework and exam blueprint were developed by subject matter experts from 70+ countries with the goal of providing PTs with an internationally validated and portable credential. First exam seating in March 2026. Exam handbook and registration available in August 2025. Find out more here:

Development

English language upskilling

If English is not your first language and you are already living/working in an English-speaking country or plan to move to one, language mastery will be critical to thriving as a physical therapist in your complex care settings. Whether you need to establish minimum proficiency for ELP testing or want to move from minimum proficiency to communication mastery, we can support those goals through our partnership with EnGen, an industry leader in workforce-aligned, on-demand English instruction.
