TruMerit® joins the global nursing community in mourning the passing of Barbara L. Nichols, DL(h), DSc(h), PedD(h), MSN, RN, FAAN—a pioneering nurse leader, visionary executive, and treasured member of the TruMerit family whose influence transformed both our organization and the global healthcare workforce.
Barbara made history as the first Black president of the American Nurses Association, serving from 1978 to 1982. Throughout more than six decades of leadership, she championed nursing excellence, health equity, diversity, professional advancement, and the essential role of nurses in shaping healthcare policy. Her courage and conviction opened doors for generations of nurse leaders while elevating the voice of nursing around the world.
Barbara Nichols was a visionary leader whose impact extended far beyond any one organization or individual. She saw possibilities where others saw barriers and opened doors that many believed could never be opened—particularly for women and for Black and Brown nurse leaders whose voices had too often been overlooked. Through her courage, determination, and unwavering belief in the potential of others, she helped transform not only CGFNS, now TruMerit, but also the global nursing profession and the lives of healthcare professionals around the world.
I will always be grateful for her friendship, mentorship, and trust. Like so many others, I benefited personally from her wisdom and encouragement. Yet Barbara’s greatest gift was not what she did for any one person—it was the enduring legacy she built for future generations. She strengthened this organization’s foundation, expanded its vision, and helped ensure that internationally educated healthcare professionals would have greater opportunities to contribute their talents in service to patients and communities worldwide.

Barbara’s leadership journey with CGFNS began as president of the Board of Trustees from 1996 to 1997. Her commitment to advancing the organization’s mission and strengthening its global impact laid the foundation for her appointment as Chief Executive Officer in 1999. Across both roles, she guided the organization with vision, integrity, and compassion, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to shape TruMerit’s work and inspire those who had the privilege of serving alongside her.
As Chief Executive Officer of CGFNS International—now TruMerit—from 1999 to 2011, Barbara guided the organization through a defining period of growth and transformation. During her tenure, she strengthened CGFNS’ reputation as the world’s leading credentials evaluation organization for internationally educated healthcare professionals, ensuring the organization became an even more trusted partner to regulators, employers, and healthcare professionals worldwide.
Among her many lasting contributions, Barbara developed the VisaScreen® program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, establishing CGFNS as the first organization authorized to certify healthcare professionals seeking occupational visas to practice in the United States. She also forged a landmark partnership with the International Council of Nurses to establish the Global Nursing Workforce Centre, advancing research, policy, and international dialogue on the ethical mobility of nurses across the globe as well as a partnership with International Consultants of Delaware to expand offerings to multiple health professions. These initiatives continue to influence TruMerit’s work and the global healthcare workforce today.
Barbara believed that advancing healthcare required not only strong leaders, but also the sharing of knowledge. Throughout her career, she authored and edited more than 200 publications on nursing and healthcare delivery, including foundational CGFNS guides that became trusted resources for internationally educated healthcare professionals pursuing careers in the United States.
In 2017, CGFNS recognized Barbara as an International Distinguished Leadership Fellow, one of the organization’s highest honors. At the time, then-President and CEO Dr. Franklin Shaffer reflected, “Barbara’s contributions to this organization are innumerable and we will be forever indebted to her for the gifts of her vision, insight and leadership that have made us a much stronger organization today.” That sentiment continues to resonate throughout TruMerit, where her vision remains woven into our mission and our work.
Barbara’s impact reaches far beyond the milestones she achieved. She inspired countless nurses to lead with courage, integrity, and compassion while challenging healthcare organizations to pursue excellence, equity, and opportunity for all. Her vision helped shape TruMerit’s mission and strengthened pathways for healthcare professionals around the world.
As we honor Barbara L. Nichols, we celebrate a remarkable life devoted to service, leadership, and the advancement of nursing. Her legacy lives on in the organization she helped build, the profession she elevated, and the countless lives she touched.
